ESPN first reported on Thursday that Sean O'Malley (11-0) will be returning to action at bantamweight at UFC 250 against former World Extreme Cagefighting champ Eddie Wineland (24-13-1). The two will meet on June 6 at a location yet to be determined, although it is expected to be held at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. O’Malley also announced this news on his Twitch channel on Thursday, while mentioning that the contracts were not yet signed.
The unbeaten O’Malley returned to his finishing ways in March when he clobbered Jose Alberto Quinonez with a head kick and follow-up punches in less than two minutes at UFC 248. The 25-year-old came back from a two-year layoff including multiple failed drug tests that were all determined to be tainted supplements for Ostarine. Across his 11 career wins, seven have come in the first round, including his first-round drubbing of Alfred Khashakyan on Dana White's Contender Series that earned “Sugar” a spot on the UFC roster.
The hard-swinging Wineland returned to the win column in June 2019 by knocking out Tiger Muay Thai fighter Grigory Popov late in the second round. The longtime vet snapped a two-decision skid against John Dodson and Alejandro Perez, and he has averaged just one fight per year dating back to 2017. Throughout his lengthy career, Wineland has notched wins over the likes of Antonio Banuelos, Brad Pickett and Scott Jorgensen.
UFC 250 is set to go down on June 6 at an unannounced location, although it is believed to be held at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Without a current headliner, the event will display a women’s featherweight championship showdown as Amanda Nunes defends her title against Felicia Spencer.
